Can I put a stain on a butcher block counter top and then apply the Howard Butcher Block Conditioner?
We don't recommend using a stain on a butcher block counter top because the stain is most likely not food safe. The stain could seep out of the counter and into your food, causing the food to taste bad and possibly be toxic. Our Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner are better alternatives and are food safe. Counter tops and butcher blocks are better left in their natural color and only maintained with Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner for the life of the wood. Over time, the wood will develop a natural color and “patina” that stain can’t duplicate; just time and conditioner.
